We Help Our Community's Students Succeed Through Scholarships

The South Western Dollars for Scholars® chapter is a nonprofit foundation that supports academic success in our community. As part of Scholarship America's® national network of locally based, volunteer-driven Dollars for Scholars chapters, our mission is to mobilize our community on behalf of postsecondary education success for our students.

Dollars for Scholars chapters like ours help hometown students achieve their educational goals by raising scholarship funds, establishing endowments, providing assistance with college readiness and the financial aid process, and distributing scholarships each year.

This website provides resources from our chapter to our volunteers, community and students. WHAT IS SOUTH WESTERN DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS?

At the local level…

Dollars for Scholars is a group of citizens working with the South Western School District and the community to develop a base of financial support for resident graduates of South Western High School *who are striving to continue their education in academic or vocational areas.

At the York County level…

We are affiliated with the York Foundation, a permanent endowment for the enhancement of the quality of life for York County residents.  This affiliation provides for skilled management of over 200 charitable funds under the direction of a board of community leaders and a staff of professionals experienced in philanthropy and financial administration.  South Western Dollars for Scholars is one of these funds.

At the national level…

We are an authorized program of Scholarship America, the parent company of Dollars for Scholars, which provides continuing support services to community-based scholarship foundations throughout the nation.  Programs operated under this affiliation have tax exempt 501(c)(3) status.  Therefore, any gifts to South Western Dollars for Scholars are deductible from federal taxes.

WHY SCHOLARSHIPS?

As the costs of higher education continue to rise, decisions to continue education beyond high school become increasingly difficult to make and to finance, especially for those having moderate financial incomes.  We want to be sure that any deserving resident graduate of South Western High School has both the encouragement and the opportunity for continued education.  Our role includes:

  • raising and managing funds,
  • establishing scholarship criteria,
  • selecting recipients and distributing awards.
